Headlight level sensor mechanism.

So this is the question, whats the answer? My 04 MGZT 2.5 KV6 +180 Sports Auto SE assembly 8th November 2004 is fitted with front and back sensors, the rear one is configured as a downward Vee not an upside down one as it should be as I have read in the many posts on this subject. It would appear it would not be possible to "flip" it up, there is not enough clearance above if so aligned for it to move. Have I got the wrong end of the stick? Thanks for your time. Chris S. Thanks Ron but that's the problem, there is not room enough for it to work if aligned as per your diagram- my garage mechanic had a look at it and he is of the same opinion- its a puzzle. weather is glorious isn't it. Chris.S.

And that's not the end of it- the front mechanism( I didn't think I had) is not operative because there is no little clip on the suspension arm and whoeverhas folded the arms up and cable tired them to the mounting plate. Now my question is would the system work with just the rear unit operative? It certainly was apparently when it was MOT last August. The xenon dipped beam is ok the drive on but a bit high for my taste but Ive had no reactions from oncoming drivers, my concern is the main beam which is too high, is this beam effected by the mechanisms Ive been going on about? This all started following new rear suspension upper arms installed, Ive "questioned" the fitter who did the job and he agrees he took rear mechanism off but replaced it as per. Chris S.

Can you not use the manual adjusters on the lights themselves to align them correctly

I had an issue prior my last MOT (the clip to the suspension arm had corroded away and the stainless steel replacement that I'd guessed at seemed to cause the sender arm to rub on the front drive shaft plus one of the two wires had parted and I was having a problem fixing it) so I removed the whole front gubbins including the jumper loom to the engine bay; I left the rear in situ.
Got the car through the MOT but I suspect the tester manually adjusted the headlights so they conformed to the acceptable level but they are now rubbish for driving as the dipped beam is far too low/shortened.
I've managed to obtain a good second hand front sensor assembly complete with lead which will have to be fitted before the next (and dreaded new) MOT test but I'm guessing my previous 'bodge' would not do for any future testing.
With the 'new' bits fitted I'm guessing I'll have to re-set the beams using the manual adjusters - where can I lay my hands on the correct height patterns/dimensions for our cars?
Now I've got an OEM pattern to work off (as it seems to be quite critical on dimensions) I'm thinking of making a small batch of stainless clips, anyone interested?

Yes please John I will have one whatever- I will try to revive the old front mech if I can get the "clip" My MOT is at the end of August so that will be about doable at my pace nowdays! Chris.S.

Ron thanks again- I suggested that to the fitter but he was like "oo nooo, nooo. but I have to contact him again and will press him for some logical reasons for not doing as you suggest. Chris S.

Sounds as if you are trying to set it in the wrong direction.
