OK, the problem was within the traction control motor. I have no idea what a a traction control motor is, but that's what the garage said...
Apparently this motor (or could "unit" be a more proper name?) is the same as used on some BMW's. They phoned and asked whether I would be OK with them ordering the part from BMW for 300 € - or if i wanted the Rover item for 600 €. I said I have no probelm with BMW parts int his particular case
