Unhappy No oil in gearbox

I changed my gearbox oil at the weekend only to discover that there were only a few drops of old oil in the sump. Just a bit worrying and would explain the increased difficulty in finding 4th gear.

I removed the undertray some time ago and it did have visible signs of oil on it but I assumed the garage had been careless when they previously serviced the car.

I dutifully re-filled the gearbox but was disappointed to see the oil dripping out of the sump after a drive of a few miles. It was dripping from the same location as the drain plug.

Looking under the car I think (hope) that I simply need to replace the sump plugs but that's where I'm having problems. Rimmers don't appear to sell them anymore (their chap was most helpful / apologetic!) and Europarts similarly don't seem to stock them.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to where I can buy two new plugs ( the torx fittings on both the filler and drain plugs are pretty worn) or, if not available, any suggestions as to how to stop it leaking?

A friend has suggested PTFE tape but I'm not sure it would survive? Any suggestions greatfully received!

Thanks

Is this a manual box or an auto? i'll assume manual from the "finding 4th" comment.
If its indeed leaking out from the drain plug then some PTFE tape will help for now at the very least.
As for finding a new one i'd get the thread and pitch measured and just find a plug from a different car.
You can buy plugs from eBay to suit older Land Rovers and things so if its the same dimensions you could get lucky?

Hi Tom - thanks for the quick reply. Yes - sorry - I should have been more specific - it is a manual box. I'll do an emergency fix with some PTFE and search around for a replacement.

No problem at all!

I would say PTFE works ok as i had to fix a diesel leak on my old A4 using this method.
The hard pipe to injector from the high pressure pump leaked a stream of diesel constantly.
I wrapped it in PTFE and tightened it down and i never leaked again, if it can stop high pressure diesel it should work just fine for now on your sump plug.
Add some PTFE and a copper washer (new one) to help crush out any surface imperfections.
Hope this helps!

I used these. They are about 2 threads longer than the original. I don't think this is a problem but I cut mine down with a hacksaw.

I got these as both my plugs had been rounded off and the Allen key just spun. I had to use a chisel to get them off. With these you have a nice big nut that you can easily use but take car when tightening up as you could strip the threads.

When I got these about 18 months ago they were only 6 quid!

It is most likely just a matter of fitting a small gasket/seal around the bolt.

Any oil leak must be investigated and watched.

"Assume" is seldom a good strategy.

Perfect! And having a tiny bit more thread will not affect anything, it'll just stick further into the gearbox but 2mm isnt going to make any odds.
