Canon had a similar idea out of the box, with the EOS20Da (a = astro) , and I think they did one with the 50D also, albeit without the cooling. There was a hefty premium on the price, if I recall the 20Da was twice the price of a regular 20D, for having effectively less in it (the moire/low pass filter was removed, and firmware slightly adjusted). You can have your existing camera adapted by the removal of the filter, with the Canon EOS300D and Nikon D70 both very popular units to do it with (they were quite sensitive to IR light). There is an added benefit too of slightly sharper images, however the drawback arises from increased moire effect. (Google moire effect photography) The other benefit of the removal is IR photography. Either by using an IR filter on the lens, or when adapted, an IR filter placed over the sensor itself. These can be quite ethereal, (again google IR photography).
