Rear wheel hub
The occasional squeak I started hearing a few days ago today became an occasionally horrible graunching/screeching noise - managed to stop it by reversing the car slightly and then proceeding. Initial indications are that it's the wheel hub, but I'm hoping to have that confirmed tomorrow. Assuming it is the hub which needs replacing, where's the best place to source one - a breaker? Checked DMGRS and Rimmer Bros., but no listing on either website for a 75.

DMGRS do replacement bearings, although yours might be the handbrake shoes? (the reversing freeing them off?)

Exactly the same symptoms on mine , turned out it was the pin on the handbrake shoes pulling through the back plate.
1 I fixed by using a slightly longer pin and a cupped washer on the back and 2nd was with a nut and bolt with a second nut to lock it on , works fine. And also follow the guides for adjusting the handbrake afterwards and then you won't have to do it again when it fails the mot on poor adjustment!! Stan

If the backplates have indeed allowed the pin to pull through, yet are otherwise in good shape (as mine are). You can replace the pins with the set up that was used years ago. Ford drum brake set up works. (I cannot recall the length of the pin) . Pin in from the back of the plate, and hold down spring and cup holding the shoes on.

[QUOTE=clf;2666658]this is what I was about to suggest. had similar on both a Passat and a mk1 Megane. On the Passat a little piece of the brake lining had detached itself, and was running around free! Could have been catastrophic if it wedged between the remaining lining and drum. The Megane, as was common on them, the complete lining had detached, but I removed it within a mile of it occurring.
