This is far from an impressive repair, the welding technique is........shall we say poor.

There are variable amounts of penetration to this weld, which has been caused by running backhand with the wire feed set too fast, the current set too low and with too much stick out.

To perform a strong structural weld, the arc needs to be fed into the weld puddle and not away from it, and the metal needs to be cut back sufficiently to reach sound steel, and not stuck on with chicken poop to rusty metal in the case of this "repair"

I'll give it two years at most before it needs doing again properly, a shame because you are generally better to get it right first time without causing yourself a lot of extra work

Looks allot better than most repairs I've seen to cars, I'm many "professional" ones that are much worse than that.
Maybe not up to coded welder standard but it's a car sill

Angry rear jacking points and sill rotten help needed

Hi all just a quick question on this subject. On cutting through the sill and removing the rotten out sill section is the sill spot welded on the underside or bonded I'm only asking as I now have the dreaded rotten sill / jacking points on the rear I've sourced a complete new outer sill repair panel from eBay £49 I just wondered how the sill is fixed at the bottom

I can only concur with Marinabrian’s comments in post 11, I’d not be happy with that repair on my car. I’m confused as the OP states in post 5 “NS lift support bracket” then in post 7 “it’s not an official jacking point”. So which is it ? I’m in agreement with Marinabrian in post 8 that the jacking pad does indeed fit into that section

The four jacking pad points are there to be used only as a means to change a wheel /tyre that may have a puncture etc, we all use them maybe for axle stands to work on changing the brake pads etc.

The jacking points to lift the front and rear of the car are in a different place ie forward of the engine and rear of the spare wheel well.

Therefore yes they are official jacking points for the above mentioned.

As we know also that the chassis/sills are that stiff if you jack the car up at the wheel changing points high enough it can and will lift that whole side of the car, but it is not meant for that hopefully this helps .

HI Adrian
Do you have a link for this complete new outer sill panel as I am sure a few members would be thankful of it cheers Arctic.

Someone said these can be hard to weld as galvanised? No idea if that's correct!

You have to clean all the galvanising off the area if seam welding. I see the part is only the outer panel, still lots of fabrication to reinforce the inner parts.
