Low Emission Zones
I understand that several towns and cities in Europe have introduced, or are about to introduce Low Emission Zones for vehicles. It will be necessary to display a badge to confirm the category of your car. A fine of 40 euros will be imposed on those without the badge!
I believe that Germany and northern Italy are the first countries to introduce these zones but does anyone know which towns/cities this applies to and how our 75s/ZTs will be affected? Colin S |

Hi,
first town in germany is cologne that has introduced such zones. Others will follow soon. In deed everyone who wants to drive in a low emission zone has to show a special batch on the windscreen that must be fastened on the glass (not removable without crashing the badge!). It is not allowed to swap one badge from one car to another. Every car needs its own one. Even every foreign visitor has to have a badge to enter the described zones. Badges are available at your local automobile club in your country and of course at german automobile clubs, "mot" stations like TÜV or DEKRA and also at most car workshops. Prices in germany vary from 4,- EUR to about 6,- EUR. The badge is valid as long as your windscreen will not be changed. There are 4 zones numbered 1 to 4. The higher the number the better the class. With number 3 and 4 you are allowed to enter every zone. In case of high emissions only cars with this high numbered badges (number 4 always) are allowed to enter the zones. All petrol Rover 75's will get a number 4, diesels will get a number 3 or a number 4 in case you already have installed a so called "particle filter" to your exhaust system. Such a filter is available for about 1.000,- EUR! So if you want to travel to germany please contact your automobile club in time! But don't worry, it doesn't cost your life... As far as I know every european automobile club outside germany can support you and also answer your questions about this special situation. Hope that you will understand what I mean although my english is a bit odd. Regards Gert |

Gert, thanks for the information about the badges and zones. I assume that when we travel to Europe this year the travel companies, motoring clubs and ferries will warn us about these latest requirements.
Do you know if the EU is responsible for introducing the low emission zones or is it each individual country that decides? Will a badge issued in the UK be acceptable in all other countries? Colin S |

Official informations are published on the website of the German Umweltbundesamt (Federal Environment Agency).
http://www.umweltbundesamt.de/index-e.htm You can read the press release Only cars with a sticker to pass through the environmental zone.

So if all european countries want their own badge and they are permanently fitted, if you did a european tour the whole windscreen would be covered in badges?
