Default Air intake mod

Good Morning
I've just been watching some You Tube clips on our cars and couldn't help but notice that the concertina part of the air intake had been cut out. What purpose does this solve. Is it a worth while mod as it looks an easy and cost free thing to do.
Many thanks for reading
Johnny

Default Intake

I assume that you are referring to the diesel models? (add details to your handle). It is questionable if there is any great advantage in doing the air intake mod and I have yet to see any figures which show an improvement.
To me, if you insist on interferring with the original setup, I would remove just the Bottom section of the concertina area which would leave it looking standard.

It really is not recommended to cut/alter the air intake. Experts at the club allege that the concertina section is a moisture trap and as such prevents water from destroying the MAF. I personally cannot see any useful improvements being made by veering away from standard. As long as the entry on top of the slam panel hasn't collapsed then this is the best scenario.

I did this in the days when it seemed the thing to do..
but then my concertina bit was also cracked .

And so far I've not seen any reason on the forum ( other than looking OEM) to put it back

But the concertina bit isn't designed to affect moisture movement although in practice it may a bit? .. as there is already a water trap/drain hole behind the corrugated bit .

It seems fairly obvious that the corrugated section is there to allow movement between the chassis and a continually rocking motor.
.

As long as you have the metal deflector shield fitted you shouldn't have any problems . if not it's a risk !!

I'm basing this on 6 years ( 60k odd miles ) and many many monsoons like downpours with this probably , NON performance enhancing mod .. done

that enuf controversy for today

Only thing I can add to this is that if the intake is shortened, then the engine will take in warm air from the engine bay, and AFAIK diesels enjoy cool/cold air.
