Default Fast idling.

I've also posted this in the 'what I did...' thread in general.
Didn't get round to changing the sparkies yesterday so I've just done it now.
Engine oil in the chamber for the one in front of the oil filler cap. The oil was last changed by a garage, I've never done that yet nor had to top up, so that's on them.
Cleaned it out with contact cleaner and paper kitchen towels. Sorted.
But . . Last time I pulled up after last fridays visit to Mickyboy and Rick_Sta, Mo was idling at 1100rpm.
After changing the sparkies she is still idling at 1100rpm.
What do I need to check this time?
and remember she is missing a post cat oxygen sensor, if that might have something to do with it. But I doubt it because this has only just started happening.
I'd better mention that when I was having the hesitation problems , on my way down south the rev counter bounced rhythmically between 600 and 1200 rpm when idling.
Any ideas please?
Adrian

Turn the ignition key to position 2 do not start it, and depress the throttle pedal fully five times in succession.

Turn off the ignition, then start the car.
