Do that by all means Stephen, but to avoid the risk of wasting hundreds of pounds on a hunch, with the engine not running see if you can turn the centre of the compressor pulley by hand (the belt and grooved pulley circumference will stay stationary).

Genuine question - if there is no problem when the aircon is in ECON mode (ie the compressor clutch isn't engaged) won't the centre of the pulley turn whether or not the compressor has a problem if the engine/aircon isn't on (therefore the clutch isn't engaged) anyway?

I have had my fair share of crank shaft pulley problems with a diesel 75 and if there was a problem with them the idle was lumpy no matter what you turned off or on - apart from the engine obviously

Hi Dave,

The centre of the pulley is connected to the pistons and swash plate whether or not the clutch is energised. Stephen should be able easily to turn this by hand. This will prove whether or not Mike's suggestion is a possibility.

Fair enough, like I said it was a genuine question as I assumed if the clutch wasn't energised the compressor would just act as a belt tensioner.

According to RAVE, remove the RH road wheel and it's just below and to the right of the crankshaft pulley.
