car non starting issues

I thought a new thread to list the various causes and symptoms that members have experienced with non starting issues might be a good idea, what do you think ?

1
to clear up the fuel filter scenario, it might be helpful if the non starting bit itself, was covered.
for example, does the engine attempt to turn over, but not fire, or is there nothing at the final turn of the key

other various non starting symptoms :

a/ does the car (engine) just whir whir with no chance of life, slowly draining the battery, or is there a splutter, a cough a hic-up.

b/ is there a spark at the plugs

c/ can a clicking be heard but no engine turn over

d/ dash board lights all on, radio and all other electrics work, but at final key turn absolutely nothing, no engine turn no clicks (very interested in this one) :lol:

e/ no dash lights, no remote locking

f/ dead battery

g/ etc etc

feel free to add accounts and cures or symptoms and possible causes, perhaps we can collate a definitive list of non starting issues

you never now, we may end up with a post worthy of condensing into a sticky

rover 75 cdt, car stalled in rain EP shows on dash board plenium had waterdrained and dried ecu car worked fine for 6 months then cut out on hot sunny day, towed home car was left for three days, started all ok drove for a week parked it up for two weeks holiday never started since, checked many obvious things but wont start.
turns over fuel pumps dont run but are fine when connected to live supply, EP shows on dash board, ecu cleaned up again
questions
1 why EP on dashboard
2 cut out while driving
3 wont start from cold
thnk you for your help if possible
