Rover 75 V6 start failure
Got in car Wednesday morning and turn over but me no startee. Turned over but not happening. RAC called and this morning towed to garage. Call from them "fuel pump failure in tank sir. 2 pumps in tank - 1 common and the likely problem". The other not even in manufacture! Bill gonna be over £300 - probably a whole lot more if it's the 2nd pump! Had car since November having had 6 superb years in a Rover 620si.
Question - is this a common problem. Car has only done 40,000 miles and I was looking at long term ownership (despite gordon brown!!!). Also, is there a recommended garage in the Eastleigh (nr Southampton) area that would hold any of these parts if necessary? Hoping this repair might be covered by the extended warranty. |

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Chances are that the problem is not fuel pump its what is referred to on this forum as 'Fuel filter' and what Rover dealers refer to as 'Fuel module'. Its situated under the rear seat passenger side and if your car is 2001 or later the fuel filter can unscrew with the result that fuel pressure to the engine is reduced and eventually the car wont start. The fix is simple - get access to the filter and screw it together. It would take an RAC/AA person or PROPER mechanic about 30 minutes start to finish. The permenant cure is to fix the filter with a clip (cost about £7 from X Part dealers). The job is not beyond the ability of the average DIY person. If you do a search on here under 'Fuel Filter' lots will pop up including 'how tos' for the fix. I would not spend £300 before the filter is checked out. HTH PS the V6 does not have two fuel pumps - a diesel 75 does. Petrol has one fuel pump (access under rear seat driver side) and the above mentioned fuel filter. Suggest that you get the car looked at by someone who knows 75's. Whereabouts in the country are you ?? PPS. Here is a link to a list of how tos. You need the one called 'Petrol fuel system failure' one up from bottom in left column of PDFs. http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/index.php?thepage=howto Last edited by GreyGhost; 1st August 2008 at 12:22.. Start issues
Thanks Guys. First chance to get back to you. The car is in a local garage in Eastleigh, nr Southampton, they have a very knowledgeable (I hope) ex Rover mechanic. He showed me the offending part under the rear seats - driver side and said it was an early problem pump which has now been modified. They are fitting the new pump tomorrow, monday and all this is covered by the extended warranty I was wise enough to pay for. Hopefully this will sort things out. In the meantime I have been following your info and links and reading the other forum related threads on fuel pumps etc.
My location is Botley, nr Southampton if there are any Rover 75 specialists in the area. |
