Sue,

As Stocktake says, the fan should run whenever the air conditioning is activated. If you don't have a.c., or if it's switched off, then the fan shouldn't run provided that the engine is not already at a high temperature due to recent use.

Simon.

Can you confirm if you have aircon and if it is on at the time though?

Or in other words Susanne, press ECON, then fan shouldn't come on then!
If you car has done more than 50k miles think about replacing the fan motor if it's the original.

Lots on here about the subject

The OP may not be aware that the Auto Climate Control - and so the fan - will come on at ignition if it was left on the last time ignition was turned off - i.e. it remembers the last state it was in.

Try switching CC off before removing the key. The fan should stop with a cold engine. Re-start and see if the fan stays off.

Default rad fan

Hi, when i put the key in the ign and turn it on the fan starts, when i turn the ign off it stops after 7-8 secs this is with a cold engine and the air con off, if i start the engine the fan runs all the time the engine is running and stops when i stop the engine after a short time, there is no coolant in the air con system as i had the rad off and have not yet had it recharged, will this affect the fan? the fan i had on the car fell apart so i put a replacement fan complete that i got from Rover spares in Hull the same as the old one ie: a four wire one, it is driving me crackers, i can take the front off, rads and fan put it back now as fast as anyone, help!

I believe the A/C has to be charged for correct operation of the cooling fan.

Ah well the problem with a second hand one is that you are dealing with an unknown quantity.

Sounds like one of the relays is sticking in the fan relay control box.
The fan cowling assembly can be removed without degassing the AC had you been able to read this thread fisrt !: http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...ead.php?t=4789

Hope you get it sorted
