The TPS is a waste of time. In addition to MissMoppet's point, it requires the co-operation of legitimate UK businesses and organisations so it's never going to stop the criminals.

Not exactly a waste of time though. In the 10 years we've had it we've not had any of the calls it says it stops.

I have had a call today apparently from the Tax office, I have apparently been reported for a tax scam and I only need to press ''1'' to talk to a representative about it.

I hung up and rang my accountant, he reckons he has had a few calls in the last few weeks about this, apparently they will for a fee fix the problem. Are people really that gullible?

It's quite simple. Make the telecoms companies liable for calls they transfer where the originator is faking the number. They know the originating exchange, otherwise how do they bill them? Lots of scam calls coming from X exchange. As they are liable they will get fined an amount for each call, rather than take the revenue for transferring the call. It will soon stop when their revenue is hit. At the moment they say it's terrible, here's a tool to block the number. But, the call is getting through then blocked. Kerching!!

I have now got caller ID, combined with a call blocker on my landline, built into my phones - BT8500. If those ringing are not in my list, they are blocked and offered the opportunity to say who they are and press #, or they can leave a message after an announcement. The system logs the fact that they have rung and been blocked, so if it looks as if it might have been a genuine call, I can always ring them back - they almost never were.

I got the system in an attempt to deal with the regular 10 of these callers per day, some years ago. The number of the calls declined steadily, to the where now the try ringing only very rarely, maybe one every 3 months.

My guess is you can be put on a white list - those numbers where someone will pick up the phone and a blacklist, you go on the blacklist if it is a waste of time ringing - like my number.

So far, my mobile number has managed to almost completely escape their attention - I can count the calls on one hand, in the 3 decades I have had this number.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

They often use VOIP. A new trick is not only spoofing a UK number, but a number which is fairly local to you, thus pretending to be someone you might know ringing.

I used to pay £7 per month for free anytime calls on my landline, but I now no longer ring out on my landline. My mobile package costs me £6.09 per month including free unlimited anytime, unlimited texts and 4Gb.

I've been with Plusnet for landline, for a number of years and each year I negotiate for the following year. They are always keen to negotiate and I'm keen to stay with them because both good and cheap.

Plusnet Landline customer are given special deals for mobile, via EE. I have one of those deals.
