Abandoned Cars

I’ve been watching YouTube videos where people go into fields and abandoned farms, where they find all sorts of rear, collectible but sadly dying cars!

Obviously someone with the money and time can repair these. And I hope they do. There are often some very rare Rovers & MGs that are begging for the right person to repair.

Is there a way of taking these cars, I wouldn’t be able to, but someone else might! Can you just take them? they have clearly just been dumped.

Someone posted a link to a similar site a few years back. There was all sorts of tasty cars in that place. Granadas Capris American cars. Vauxhalls and all seemed to be in reasonable condition too. Apparently the site was guarded by a large dog so the filmer had to he careful. Would love to explore somewhere like that.

I sometimes see these type of videos on YouTube. The ones that make me smile are the ones in the USA where they find a 1960s vehicle up to its axles in mud and after 45 mins they have it running and in some cases even moving under its own power.

A friend bought a 1970's Ford Capri off Ebay one night after returning from the Pub. It had to be trailered to his house and I got a phone call to see what I thought about it and if we could get it going.

The last time it had been on the road was the mid 90's and my guess it was parked up because of a fault and had never run since.

The fuel in the tank did not smell like petrol so a can of fuel was put on the roof. I bypassed most of the ignition system so I could get a spark once I had cleaned the points. The starter was slow but it at least turned over and after a few mins and a can of easy start if did splutter into life but smoked like a steam engine, it ran for about 5 mins badly but then cut out and refused to start again.

He put it back on Ebay a months or so later saying it had run and he made a small profit. The person who bought it collected it the same day and paid cash for it.

Is there a legal way of getting the cars?

I’m guessing you can’t just go in and take, even if the property is abandoned, you wouldn’t be able to get owners rights and paperwork from the previous owner.

Whilst I was out of the UK, a few years ago, another member spotted my V6 parked off road behind some garages under a tree covered in bird poo and green from the tree, making the car look neglected and abandoned. He posted up a photo of it on the forum. Even though he knew the car from car meets, he did not recognise it.

From there, the car was scrubbed up nice and went to live in storage in a former railway tunnel.
