HI Dave.
Just read this and what you found out to be the fault, i wonder if the thread is ok on the car that the oil filter screws to, or even the filter thread.

I presume you have re-instated another filter and oil by now and all is ok, worth double checking though after a few hundred or thousand miles.

im glad the problem was a quick fix problem for you dave even though it happened at the most inconvenient time .. as usual. i usually buy genuine rover oil filters but have bought aftermarket ones and did find one or two of them were very loose on the threads whilst being screwed up.sloppy would be a better description but did tighten up at the top end of travel. maybe i was lucky with mine but even though the threads were loose and i hate trying to undo overtightened ones but still i use an old length of auxilary belt and moles to nip up that bit more. helps to remove also. nice to hear its all ended well though its worrying at the time. xsport.
