Paul.

I reused the old one - looked like a patch lock so I put a dab of Loctite on it.

Paul.
The alloy thread in the block would strip long before the high tensile bolt reached its elastic state, its definitely not that. Its a patch bolt as Mike says, and can be reused with a little loctite
I must be evil and rough as anything. In all the years of building kseries and kv6, I have never changed a timing tensioner bolt or come to that a camshaft set screw.

Technically speaking the conrod end cap waisted bolts are stretched, but still within the elastic state, including the cylinder head through bolts which are long in length and have a large thread area of engagement in the alloy bottom plate allowing reasonable torque to be applied to reach the elastic state.

I'm pleased to see you saying this Gary. I bought new set screws for my KV6 inlet camshaft sprocket wheels but realised after inspecting the old ones that I need not have done.

Time for a quick update.

When I described the symptoms, the garage said they thought the timing belt had failed. As the car shed its coolant over a few days, I assumed the water pump had failed.

I called the AA to check the car - on turning the ignition the car jolted again. The AA man said the head would have to come off, and reluctantly towed me to the garage.

Today I got the verdict - the timing belt is fine, the problem was the starter motor!

The garage can find no reason for the coolant loss, so any ideas on this?

Could it be a leaking water pump or did the garage expose it and examine it for leaks? Sometimes it can just be a matter of a drip which can easily be missed.

Hardly surprised, just read through a page of discussion on the timing belt wondering what the heck it had to do with a starter motor fault. Glad that investigations haven't gone down that route at expensive to yourself.

Simon

Coolant loss is a separate issue, as Simon says it needs proper examination of potential leak points.
