I have the same problem, although the car is fine.

I believe it's an age thing and expect most here are sufferers.

Took it to a garage so they could help me diagnose with two sets of ears and a 4 poster ramp etc.

After this we both thought it was front top mount, but after driving down a hill with a nice gentle-ish radius curve, I heard a rotational slight dunk dunk dunk, almost as if it was raised paint dashed lines on the road.

Driving the route again, it was plainly obvious it was not lines in the road, but either the CV, or the other side of the half shaft where it fits into the other section.

Really frustrating as underneath you cannot get it to do it, it is only when the vehicle is about to move/moving!

Also you cannot get it to do it with slight friction on the clutch, it is only when the car is free to roll so to speak it makes an almighty clunk if the conditions are right.

Pretty weird, last time I had a similar problem and it was shaft related, I got immense wobbling at speed like a wheel being unbalanced, so in this instance it could well be the CV. Well I sure hope it is, as if the stake nut has somehow come loose after replacing front wheel bearings, I dread to think what sort of damage it may have done.

I think CV would explain why the clunk happens a little louder when there is angle on the steering.

Good news is all the suspension at the front is mint condition pretty much, so I suppose a silver lining.

I cant quite figure the mechanics in my head that would make a CV clunk on lift off in a straight line, unless it was totally cream crackered, so my money is on the half shaft section. Bit of a pain that you cannot buy the full driveshaft all assembled and just swap the thing.

If you had read any of the thread 1) you would see that that is NOT the problem, and 2) it was the first thing that was replaced!

You dont get a rotational clunking off a little tie bar.

I’d go along the lines of post #12, or a possibly a loose Caliper.
At least it should be easy enough to check and rule out.

Have you tried securing your tongue? I reckon a tongue would make quite a hefty 'thunk' in an empty skull.

Nicely put!! - tho I would add that sometimes the frustration of a mechanical issue can mean that the written word comes over overly harsh.
