Default Reversing sensors - continuous beep and not working - what should I check?

My reversing/parking sensors seem to have packed up. When I engage reverse there is a long continuous tone for about 5 seconds and then nothing more. None of the sensors seem to work.

I had heard it could be caused by dirty sensors, but I washed the car last night and there's no change.

Anyone had (and solved) this problem?
What should I be checking?

Hi.
I have had this problem big time, renewed all four sensors brand new wiring to the sensors, still nothing.

Reverse light comes on when selected all four sensors are ticking away happily, at a loss as to why they still will not work. by the way I am getting no tone at all when selecting reverse gear.????????

Good luck.

Could be wiring loom or faulty sensor.
to test sensor turn ignition on and wave your hand over each sensor in turn, you should hear a faint clicking if that sensor is good.
I think to check wiring you need the bumper off, perhaps someone that`s had similar will hop in and give more info.
Water can get to sensors at the rear, I have had same as you but as it dried out it cleared and worked OK, one sensor had a tiny gap from the slightest of bumps, put some clear silicon and touch wood it`s been fine for 2 years now.
Ken.

Thanks - I'll give that a shot.
Where is the control box located? I might just try cleaning up the connections to that first and then try disconnecting one sensor at a time to try and trace the fault.
I'd prefer to avoid removing the bumper unless I have to.

there are a number of earlier threads regarding non-working reverse sensors, quite often the problem is reported as nothing more than contamination, carefully wipe each sensor in turn removing deposits including polish; and re-test.

If that fails search using forum Google shown on first line of Index page it's far more reliable than standard forum search.

Thanks chipsceola
Yes, I've read many of the older threads about this issue and seen the mention of contaminants. I've washed the sensors already, but could probably go to town with a cotton bud on dipped in fairy liquid on each sensor.

If it the same as the Rover, the control box is tucked behind the Sat Nav at the rear of the off side of the Tourer. Hope this helps.

Thanks Jules, don't have satnav, but that does indeed help.
Can you access it through the offside access panel (where the CD changer lives) or do you need to remove all the trim/paneling?

Mine was the wiring - it was mostly dust!
You can find out which sensor is causing the issue by listening to them up close - you'll hear them 'clicking'.

Even though just one wasn't clicking on mine, the wiring was terrible and I had to make my own new loom.

Great, ok, I'll listen for clicking then and try to locate the control box.
