Switched power output from Radio
I've got an mp3 player that transmits to the radio via an RF channel. Works reasonably well except doesn't really fit well in the cig lighter socket, so I want to wire up an auxiliary socket. Rather than permanent power I wonder if the radio (Iovox CR80) has a switched power output (the radio switches off after 20 minutes if the ignition key is in the off position)?
I'm guessing it does have, as the supply to the boot mounted CD changer, but if someones got a circuit diagram that would be a help. While on the subject, how do get the head unit out to access the wiring? |

DO NOT USE the switched power output for this.
If you mean the cars +12v radio connection - it's for signal only, if you actually take any load off it wierd things happen to the cars electrics. If you mean the remote / amp power on the headunit, thats only for a signal - if you try to take any real load off it you'll burn out your headunit. |

The Purple/Yellow is a 12v switched output, not a signal output (the 75/ZT use it to supply the aerial amplfier).
For a high power output it can be used to feed a relay coil. Last edited by raykay; 3rd July 2015 at 18:52.. |

Thanks. I'll check the power consumption of the mp3 player, but I'd be surprised if it's more than a couple of hundred mA.

Finally assembled all the bits, have mounted a cig lighter socket in the tray behind the the cover where the drivers side cup holder would go, and cut a hole in the cover to allow access ( I have a spare cover anyway).
I'm going to use the relay as suggested above, and will put a 1A fuse in the supply as well. Probably easiest to take all the connections from the wires to the radio DIN plug so in addition to the purple/yellow for the switched supply to the relay can anyone tell me the wire colours for the +12v supply and ground please? |

You could just wire one up directly to the fuse box. The "Aux" fuse on an 03 (assuming it's the same as mine) would be a switched live and you'll have no need for relays. see this guide i did when putting my aux socket in the cubby box.

Well, all wired up and installed*.
Turns out Purple/Yellow is NOT a 12v switched output, it has about 9v on it all the time, which is enough to activate the relay. I've left it like that for the moment, will just have to remember to unplug the mp3 player when not in use. I'll probably end up just wiring it to a switched ignition feed and ditch the relay. *and of course one of the radio panel fixing screws disappeared inside the dashboard, probably never to be seen again (but just heard rattling)! |
