Rover 75 overheating

Dear all

I've recently bought a Rover 75 2.0 Diesel 2002 with 158,000 Km and now I have an overheating problem. The people in the garage said that they have to put a new cooling fan and then see if that was the problem or if it something more serious.
My dilemma is if it is worth repairing the car or get rid of it. At the moment is in a car park (free).
I have been asked £350 + VAT for the fan and time, with the possibility of more...

Any advice would be much appreciated. I used the car for 3 months and bought it from a private for £700. I like the car, but I also understand that it's a bit old.

If you don't use the air conditioning and aren't in the habit of towing a caravan uphill fully loaded, the diesels will usually run quite happily in our temperate climate without the cooling fan.

It doesn't sound like your garage knows these particular cars well - worth finding one that does and who can get to the root cause of the problem economically.

Can you explain the overheating problem in more detail? Are you losing coolant? When does it happen? Does the heater blow hot when you turn it up? Are the top and bottom radiator pipes hot?

Fans really are consumable items, but the amount quoted is expensive for a low value car

suggest you contact Arctic or Jules; key things to consider are why you think its overheating. Is it losing coolant? Is the fan working (at any speed; a 2002 might be a two or three speed fan). Is the thermostat working or is it stuck (usually the original stays open at which point some people put in an inline stat which can then stick shut causing overheating)

Jules has a great service to change fans etc as do some of the other pros on here and I would say that this is a far better approach than handing your wallet to a garage that does not really know the cars well
