Maybe using layer masks in a similar way to this video. Adapting this type of technique should permit the great look you had for the car and then the headlights can be merged in.
Not that I am expert in this subject but I have tried it a few times.

I guess you will not see this at work either

Never really played much with HDR, but yes it seems an ideal subject for it. I'll give that a go.

Just had a look at those on Flikr Steve (can't get on in work as it's classed as Social Media!), I did the same a while ago on my black 75, makes a real difference with a CPL.

Have a look at the pictures I've just uploaded of an abandoned RAF base I was at yesterday, a lot of messing about with manual settings to get lower, more moody, exposures. It was such a bright day, I actually had to stop the camera down to f11 for some of the outdoor shots!
