Default Fan kicks in immediately on diesel

Hi

On the new arrival, I've noticed that the fan comes on immediately upon engine being started. Temp gauge doesn't go any higher then a quarter when it should be about half way. Car in question is a mk1 75 Tourer diesel. Any ideas? Many thanks.

Hi,note the "true" engine temp using OBD in 7.0

Could be a stuck relay or a faulty PCB in the relay box (in that case i can help)

Is it a 2 or 3 speed fan ?

Is the heater control switched onto ECON ? If not it's probably the relay as mentioned

Thanks. Well, heater is switched off. Even when on, it seems to be the same. Car is 'Classic' spec.

I'm not sure if it's two speed or three speed. How do I check this?

Thanks.

In case of 2 speed, you must see through the grill at 2 o' clock (sorry TC),a resistor.

Anyways,it's a bump removing affair

Behind the fan blades at the 2 o'clock position is where the resistor usually fits.

Not on a mk1 it isn't (to change the resistor), but would be to get at the fan control box.

Glad you said 'usually' there - I've found one tucked to the side behind the fan cowl - and it was a silver one: failed of course....

There are exceptions to everything. Resistors hidden behind the cowl probably failed the first time the aircon was used.

My fan starts immediately I start the car if the air con is on. It goes off if I select econ on the atc. Check this isn't all it is Rav, it might be there's nothing wrong with the car at all.
