Now this is one i must get to. me +2 i think.

Thought i would add to the attractions:

20 minutes away you are deep in the Lake district - a stunning place of beauty that everybody living on this Island should see.

In Ulverston you also have:
the Laurel and Hardy museum
http://www.laurel-and-hardy.co.uk/index.php
a very impressive Buddhist monastery which is open to visit
http://nkt-kmc-manjushri.org/

15 minutes away is Barrow in Furness.
here you will find

Barrow's shipbuilding heritage -
http://www.dockmuseum.org.uk/Default.aspx?page=0
Free entry - although small its fairly interesting.

Furness abbey -
http://www.visitcumbria.com/sl/furness-abbey.htm
THE place to get your 2012 calender photos taken Photos can be taken from the amphitheatre at no cost. entry to the ruins themselves is about 3 or 4 quid.

Walney island -
http://www.walney-island.com/site_contents_01.htm
some great shoreline for amazing photos - in particular Bigger bank and earnsie bay (which when windy is wild, crashing waves and the 75 would make a great photo.
Also the home of a nature reserve for bird lovers and 'The Ferry' a carvery for under a fiver (well it really was £4.95 a couple of years ago)

Piel island and castle -
http://www.pielisland.co.uk/index.php
only accesable via a foot ferry (well rowing boat with a motor)
bear in mind there is not a lot left of the castle (its over 800 years old)

You also have Devonshire dock hall (DDH) where the latest trident submarines are built - yes they are built inside here then lowered into the water owned by BAE (the site was formerly VSEL/Vickers shipbuilding) this thing was built after filling in a channel and is MASSIVE. of course there are no tours or visitors allowed, but you are almost guaranteed to see a submarine or two if you head over michaelson road bridge.
On the other side of the bridge you can see (they were there last year and had been for a few years before) 3 corvettes ordered built by the Sultan of Brunei.
These were built at massive costs, as the people of brunei are naturally small in size, everything on these ships is too. what the rich dude didnt realise was that the ships were far far to advanced for the Brunei Navy and as such they simply couldn't crew them. the sultan left them at Barrow while he tries to find a buyer.
I grew up in Barrow, my family lives there and i visit as often as i can. (going in 5 weeks).
If anyone needs any advice on hotels/B&B's etc then feel free to ask - i will add that hotels in barrow work out a fair bit cheaper than Ulverston.

May have to sell the V8 to pay the bill. As for jumping off of the bridge, with my knees I'd be lucky to climb onto it.
