The local (Land)Rover garage have confirmed it is the fan motor that is faulty......

Unfortunately, there are no used parts available at the breakers, so it would involve shipping in a replacement package from the UK - which I was trying to avoid, due to time constraints!!!

The mechanic was kind enough to take me to another local garage, who do specialise in Auto Electrics and they have agreed to have the car at 5.00pm today (when they reopen after their 'siesta') and the plan is to 'rebuild/repair' the faulty motor - likely the brushes......

If this gets things working again, with no other issues, then it will be a matter of organising a Revotec replacement from Jules

Meanwhile, it's 'windows set to OPEN' and enjoy the blast of hot air that assaults us

If it's a 3 speeder that's your best plan, provided that this fault hasn't been undetected for some time. That's when the motor commutator gets ruined. Order a set of four brushes from Engineering Carbon Products immediately and pay them to send them to you by the fastest service possible or arrange it yourself here. Do not be tempted to buy brushes from e-bay. They won't last.

If the motor will accept new ECP brushes, they will last you a long time. No need to do anything else for years and years until they wear out again. Preserve them by using 'Econ' mode in the cooler months with just an occasional blast of air con. to keep the system serviceable.

Simon

Edit: important note for your garage
When removing the motor end cap, don't grip the casing too tightly in the vice. The permanent magnets are of a composite material, are brittle and are only glued in place.

Thanks Simon, unfortunately, as I have been at pains to point out, this is all happening in rural Spain where English is still a foreign language and not often spoken or understood!

Talk of buying via the Internet and shipping by post would add at least 10 days to the misery of not having A/C in near 40 c heat........

Hopefully, the garage have done this a few times and can get a result!

Will post final outcome - thanks to all who have contributed

Des, If the auto electricians at the garage are going to strip the original fan motor, the only fix will be to replace the brushes.

What are the plans for the garage to source the replacement fan bushes? I suppose they will have to place an order from either their supplier or a third party source such as the supplier in Simons link.

10 days is not that long to wait the job has to be done.

Hi Dallas - I disagree, 10 days is way too long to be without A/c in this heat - IF it can be avoided!!??

The net result this evening is that the front end is stripped and the fan unit is diagnosed as a write off......not much I can say to that, especially in Spanish!

The guy seems reasonably optimistic that he can source a replacement fan (within Spain) and get the job done in the next few days, which I hope to have confirmed tomorrow, along with a price.

One further question please, does anyone know if there are alternative makes/models of fan (3 speed) that will fit the Rover 75 CDTi - I know they raided the BMW parts bin and that many Freelander parts are interchangeable.......

The only upside to being here (in comparison to UK garages), is that hourly rates are much lower - so IF I don't like what I hear tomorrow, then I do have the option (financially speaking) of telling the guys to put it all back together and driving off - but I would be in exactly the same position!!

Why 10 days? Most companies can arrange express deliveries worldwide these days and its not as expensive as it used to be. I know a person who lived in Germany and ordered a part from Rimmers (express) and it took two days. I sometimes need parts urgently from abroad (not car parts) and I can get them delivered next day for about £27. I would of thought Jules could get a Revotec to you in a lot less than 10 days.
Its got to be worth a phone call.

Regards John

Hi John - the 10 day estimate is based around our postal experience here to date - BUT you are correct to suggest that a courier service might well beat that time frame and I should check it....

However, the car was taken to a 'auto electrics' garage last night and the front end stripped - I have been told to expect a call today with parts availability and a price - and at that point I have to be in a position to make my mind up - do I stick with what is offered OR try and 'beat the clock' and get parts shipped in and fitted locally??

I have contacted Jules this morning (via PM) to ask if there are alternative parts options - maybe I need to do so again and see what the 'best delivery time/cost' is for getting a Revotec replacement sent out....

Update*****

A mixture of good and bad news on this issue.....

The local garage have now changed tack and say they cannot get parts from within Spain, so they need to order from the UK - at great expense!!!

I have therefore requested that the car be reassembled and made available for collection later this evening - another taxi ride

I have also now spoken to Jules and subject to me carrying out a 'control box' test, I will order a Revotec kit from him on Monday, for rapid delivery via UPS for next week - and then I need to find a mechanic to fit the kit, as my usual garage will have closed for their August holidays - as does most of Spain!!!!

Meanwhile, we will be running around without A/C in Spain, in August

Des,

I think the Revotec solution is going to be the best for you.

Did they actually get as far as removing the motor end cap and assessing the worn components inside? Or did they take one look at the PCB and the motor and take fright?

Simon

Hi Simon - in truth, I have no idea!

However, I have said I want the car 'rebuilt' and available later today.....

It's one thing not having A/C, but not having a car is even worse

Just hope there are no 'issues' getting the Revotec kit fitted here - it sounds reasonably straightforward - for a mechanic - so pinkies crossed!

Where would I be without all this help/support/knowledge available from the Club

Thanks to all contributors once again
