Default A harsh winter is coming!

Hobnobs maker warns biscuit prices set to soar

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-59728325

Before people start, no it's not the BBC spreading gloom and doom. It is a news item based on a release from the manufacturer and being reported by many media channels. Not that I would expect anyone here to critisize the BBC for reporting news!

A 5% increase is not much, compared to the 20% VAT on some of these goods.

Just to clarify, it should be noted that Hobnobs, due to the chocolate coating, are considered a luxury and therefore attracts VAT.
Jaffa cakes, are another matter, as they are considered to be cakes.
Cakes are considered to me essential food and therefore do not attract VAT.

Naturally, biscuits with chocolate chips are zero VAT, unlike chocolate coated biscuits.

Purchasers of Gingerbread men should therefore exercise extreme caution.
If he has chocolate eyes you will not be charged VAT as these eyes are deemed at chips.
However, if your Gingerbread man is donning something like a chocolate belt, you will be charged VAT on the whole thing (not just the chocolate coating of the belt).

I am not making this up!
