I've found that if you use 2 bits of wire plugged into the socket instead of the paper clip, it makes it easier to touch the ends together to get the timing right .
or even go really advanced and use a push button soldered on the wire

Hey Chris, at the risk of going off-thread, have you really got an X1/9? What model/spec?

Since we decided to keep the car i got it in for a service had the engine/gear oils done plus the spark plugs. One thing i want to know is how important is the make ie oils/spark plugs as the ones that the garage fitted cost around £4 pounds each they never told me the make just that they got them from euro parts good or bad?. As i know oil grades for the car is important to i am runing it on 5/30 fully synthetic its oil the garage gets in been told its the right spec for my v8 it is also used in various mercs & bmw cars this cut my cost by half cutting out buying castrol edge from halfords. The thing is cutting out brand names to go for non branded is it such a good idea? aldo

I've fitted motorcraft plugs, used vauxhall long life oil (same spac as MGR recommend) all sourced from ebay. Genuine MGR filter, which is motorcraft. and vauxhall longlife antifreeze which is identical to Xpart stuff.

Morris lubricants for the diff oil, and Castrol Dexron III for the gear box.
