Default Road Tax

I was browsing through the replies for my last thread on the GBP 7995 Connoisseur SE for sale on ebay/Autotrader. Someone kindly pointed out the high Road Tax involved (495?). Is this unique to the 2.5 V6?

I was looking to buy a Connoisseur SE when my lump sum comes through (well the wife's lump sum I have promised to pay her back!) would I be better off with a 1.8 or CDTi??

Hi Rob

I think that may have been me who made that comment (could be wrong though!)

If it's a 2.5 V6 & higher tax band, it's because it was manufactured in 2006 onwards.

It's the year it was made rather than engine size that puts it in the higher band.

If a V6 is your preference (and they are lovely), try to find one that was produced in 2005 or a little earlier.

To give you an idea how ridiculous the tax band system is:

My 2001 MG ZT190 2.5 V6, 2003 R45 Conn 2.0 V6, 2003 R75 Conn SE 2.0 V6 & 2004 MG ZT260 SE 4.6 V8 fall into the same tax bracket of £285 per year whereas:

Both my 1999 R75 2.5 V6 Conn SE's are £230 per year

My 1999 R75 1.8 Club SE is also £230 per year !

On the flip side, my 2005 Renault Trafic 1.9 DCi LWB van is £225 per year

So there you go, I hope this helps you a little, as confusing as it is !!

The road tax is calculated on the date of registration, rather than the date of manufacture.

The key dates are 1st March 2001 and 23rd March 2006.

A V6 registered prior to the 1st March 2001 is taxed on engine capacity, which is currently £230 per annum.

The same car registered between the 1st March 2001 and 22nd March 2006 are taxed on emissions and band M but frozen at band K.
The tax for those is currently £285 per annum.

From 23rd March 2006, the tax is no longer frozen on band K, so the band M is payable, which is currently £485 per annum.

If in doubt, use this handy little item -

Renewed mine yesterday as it runs out at the end of the month. I went for the £24.00/Month.
But please take note that the deduction only is made on or just after the first WORKING DAY of the Month. So my first payment is the 4th of Feb... But they do send you a confirmation via E-Mail with all the dates.
