I have taught myself a lot about plants and insects through photography. I am still no expert but I can name a few more than I used to know.
Good morning Paul

Here is photo I took in 2010 of a red beetle which had applied itself to the wall of our camp tent out in the bush in Kenya. The quality of the photo is quite poor, but what is a bit of a mystery is the name of the pretty beetle? Any ideas?

Thanks Phil,

Pretty happy with them as it's really my first attempt .

They are hard critters to photograph that's for sure

Cheers Jeff I have never tried my hand at macro photography. I know Paul has some tips for attracting butterflies and insects into the pathway of the lens. Hopefully he will see this and be to able say how he manages, or someone else please

What set up did you use for the shoot?

Hi Phil,

Just my 100mm 2.8 macro lens and my flash with a bounced diffuser.

I set my camera to single spot continuous focus, spot metering and all were taken handheld as I didn't have my tripod with me

What a beauty!!
I am afraid my knowledge is limited to Sussex. I bet there are a host of fantastic insects in Kenya and indeed all of Africa.

Thanks for posting Phil.
