Next up I am going to reuse the fastenings for the main mount bolts. The bolts and steel cleaned off and sent to the local metal plating company to be re plated. I have done this quite a few times on previous cars with great affect

Next up the rear subframe.

I was quite surprised how good a condition this was considering it has been under a car for 16 years. I have worked on Jags IRS and other marques sub frames which looked a lot worse than this after 10-15 years.

Getting fairly fed up with the angle grinder and numerous knot wheel attachments but its the best way to do this unless you send the parts for sand blasting.

Incredible work Jon.

My rear end will need sorting soon, and I keep putting it off.

It is obvious you are a perfectionist !!

Hope you douse it all with DYNAX 50 to protect your work for years to come

Thanks mate, just the beginning of a bit of a long road. I think the rear is probably easier than the front. Tell you what if you want my old subframe when it's off give me a shout.

It will be a bit of a bigger if you leave your rear too long

Not a perfectionist mate just like trying to do things properly. This car is a keeper so if I can give her a new lease of life and use her that's good. I don't do this for car shows and clip board Charlie's, just for my own well being (It's my hobby and stress killer) and means my cars stay reliable for longer.

Not used Dynax is it any good?

Dallas, Jules

Thanks for the comments.

I do have an eye on my next project. I am on the hunt for an Alfa 159 2.4 TI or Lusso. TI would be favoured but would go for a Lusso with the right credentials. Mad? Yep probably

Not so much done.

all the attacked metal neutralised ready for primer. Once black and dry hte oxidisation of the metal has stopped

Rear sub frame.

Also washed off and degreased the front subframe to see the extent of the rust and the state of the bushes (I have new to fit).

The corroless paint has arrived so I have to decide if I am going to spray or brush. Next step will be removing the bushes from the front subframe. You will notice I have not neutralised the trailing arms yet, thats because I want to change the bushes first but I have not ordered the replacements yet.

The subframe bolts are at the metal plater. They are doing it for a very good price and I know their work so I will be interested to see how the fittings look on completion.

I have also pulled out the spare MG steering rack ready for overhaul. I may pay a local firm to do this for timing reasons.

Dynax S50 is possibly the best product I've come across in 40 years of trying to prevent corrosion !!

It is a military standard product IMO and much loved by Vintage car owners.

Front and rear sub frames

So had some time to spend on refurbishing the sub frames.

Previously the rear had been taken back to bare and the metal neutralised. So time for some work on the front.

Taken back to bare and all the corrosion attacked.

IMG_20190914_195317 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

IMG_20190914_195325 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Next the old bushes are pressed out. I used the good old fashioned method for these but I have to say it was on the edge of what an M12 thread could take.

So to press out firstly the flanges had to be bent back to give me a landing for the back tube

IMG_20191007_145957 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Then using this set up for a M12 stud bar and nut, 60mm dia tube with 10mm wall thickness as the backing tube, a 32 mm socket as the pressing tube to push the bushes out.

Laid out on the deck in bits

IMG_20191008_124552 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

and set up on the bush

IMG_20191008_120432 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

I used a breaker bar to turn the nut. I use an old old backing plate I made up out of 10mm think steel with a 12mm hole through it on the the back of the backing tube (60mm for these)

The bush moving

IMG_20191007_150008 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

and out

IMG_20191008_120514 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

I did have to use heat from a propane torch on a couple to get the bushes moving and the M12 threads were shot after a couple of bushes so the torque required to move the bushes is on the edge of what an M12 can deliver If you use this method dont even think about using cheap thread bar from DIY stores

and the bush gone

IMG_20191008_124211 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Old bushes and new bushed sat side by side with the news one ready to be pressed in.

IMG_20191008_154026 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

and the front subframe neutralised ready to receive the bushes

IMG_20191008_154034 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

IMG_20191008_154044 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

IMG_20191008_193938 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Then the new bushes pressed in using the same method as removal. The black stuff is a cavity wax which.1 helps the metal to slide 2. Preserves the internal faces.

IMG_20191009_154648 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

the hardest bit of fitting is making sure bushes starts straight.

The bush fully pressed home..

IMG_20191009_155255 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

IMG_20191009_155258 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

and a full set

IMG_20191009_165911 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Next up was the task of priming the front sub frame.

As stated before I am using a corroless paint scheme for my chassis parts.
We use it in the marine industry and seems to keep corrosion at bay on ships in salt water so will be good on these parts. I have used it in the past to great affect (I even sprayed an entire underside of a car with it once).

QDR primer (rust stabiliser) applied. I didnt know whether to spray or roller the paint. I decided to roller as I could not be bothered with protecting the rest of the garage, This stuff does stink when applied and curing

IMG_20191011_155610 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

IMG_20191011_155405 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

I then did the same for the rear sub frame

IMG_20191011_155257 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

IMG_20191011_155328 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

IMG_20191011_155333 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Both sub frames ready for top coat black corroless which is glass reinforced impregnated for strength and will give a semi gloss finish

Next up I had to prime everything else in the same QDR.

I even keyed and primed all the new parts as they will be getting the same top coat to give them the same protection for many years.

The front suspension parts.

You will notice there is a hub missing. As I stated previously my spare was knackered so I am hoping that when I remove mine from the car it is good.
Additionally I didn't keep the anti roll bar brackets from the car i broke so hopefully mine are ok

New backing plates and shocks also primed.

IMG_20191011_160616 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

The rear suspension parts

again missing atop mount and the new upper arms, shocks, tie bars and mounts primed ready for top coat.

IMG_20191011_160225 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

Additionally all the rubber and plastic used on these parts cleaned and restored ready for fitting

IMG_20191012_160158 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

And finally the subframe bolts back from the platers

IMG_20190914_200745 by Jon Christie, on Flickr

So now in the middle of top coating everything and ordering new fastenings for all the parts.

I need to get the lowering springs cleaned off and powder coated but will do that when I remove my roll bars from my car so they all get done at the same time.
