Cocoa?

What's that? Is it a kind of beer?

Seriously though, don't extract the Mick from Montegos. I still have my jacket and tie from the Launch event, and a 'facts and figures' manual too. I had two and liked both. Not the best car in the world, but competitive IMHO.

As a certain Mr Darth Vader once said "Impressive, most impressive."

I'll have to take issue with the couple of posts Maestro-bashing. There were basically three things wrong with the car. It was late to launch and looked dated as well as plain to the point of ugly, the VW gearbox was a bad implementation (which AR learned their lesson with the subsequent 200/400) and they frankly weren't built all that well.

However, they were an absolute hoot to drive, the 1.6/2.0 litre models in particular trouncing the likes of the Astra (awful chassis) and Escort (crude suspension). In MG guise the Golf GTI had a serious competitor which matched it closely for performance, was better in the twisties and kicked its backside round the house for practicality. Looking back, the 80's had three truly great driver's hot hatches; the Golf, the 205 and the MG Maestro. The XR and GTE ranges along with all the rest were overhyped marketing machines.

The Montego was a fairly decent motor. Again however it was too late to the party. The Countryman was a good motor to have, particularly the diesel. The hot versions were quick but the front was badly underdamped; I did drive one MG owned by a mechanic friend who had fitted a slightly stiffer set up and it was far better.

If both vehicles had been out 4-5 years prior they would have fared far better. But we all remember British Leyland all too well sadly. And predictably most have now been scrapped, which is a shame.

Wished I'd had a barn full of them when the Russians were buying them back.

A mate of mine was running around in a right shed that cost him £50, two Russians knocked on his door and offered him £400 for it.

Needless to say he snapped their hands off.
