Many a true word spoken in jest they say: we used to teach French or German as schools second language, now I believe Japanese is an option in some, Chinese is sure to follow if they become the world's major trading partners.

Me too.

There was a wooden ricketty platform that you could walk out on if brave enough, and a little shed at the side selling soldiers(pipers) mounted on a wee granite plinth.

One big loch now

Thats right and the platform had a wee metal rail.

What would H&S make of that today.

I worked as the general manager of a group of companies that manufactured and retailed fireplaces. They owned quarries and manufacturing sites around Europe and UK but imported budget range products from China to be competitive in the showrooms.

All our granite however came from China to be made up in Europe simply because it was a quarter of the price of the next cheapest which was African. Sadly it will probably be prohibitive cost wise to use local granite.

No longer are we loyal to the local or national economy when it comes to spending our own or corporate money.

You need their tribal name for instance Inuits of Northern Canada.
calling Inuits "Eskimo" is like calling a black person "coloured" or a Native American a "red indian"
Trust me.
Ken.
Chinese----------------Same thing. Must be zillions of dialects.

If we end up all speaking Chinese does that mean all of them ??--

Yep you guessed it CHINA.
I read the same story and immediately thought, how could the people elected to represent the people of Aberdeen betray them in such a way. I then checked the saving per head of population, about £2 a week for one year on their local taxes.
I reckon if the elected representatives of Aberdeen were to cut their inflated salaries and self opinions for one year, it would not cost the residents that £2 a week. Then the Granite City would truly retain it's reputation of a City built on local stone, built by local enterprise.
But then again, I'm a Southerner so what do I know about politics North of the border.
