The Moon
Been tinkering again with moon shots. This was the best of a meagre bunch of shots I managed on the clearest night of last week.

I used to be really interested in astronomy (telescope on cold nights) and I still have a interest in photography but I have never tried putting the two together. How long a lens did you use? as I am a bit limited at the long end.

Thankyou Mr Leopard
It was shot at an equivalent zoom of 3360mm. Digiscoping is something i've been doing for years. This one was shot on my Canon SX30 IS at full pelt, though the noise levels are higher than previous attempts with my 30D and Bigma 500mm. |

I can't see the noise you describe. Using the SX30 how did you set the camera up to reach the 3360mm Alan?
Yesterday I visited the Wildlife Photographer exhibition of the year in Cape Town where the winners, the runners up and those whose photos were highly commended talked how they achieved the best photos from around the world. A mix of skill, trial and error, patience and luck! Photography at the exhibition was not allowed. It was a treat and gave me a few ideas. Some of the photos I have seen on site here are in my opinion of the same standard I saw yesterday. Not mentioning any names, as you know who you are |

Trial and error is a big part of it but when shooting wildlife there is a lot of luck involved.
Capturing behaviour is what makes a shot for me. Shooting a standard crisp sharp shot can be a bit like a stock image but if you capture an animal or bird doing something it makes a more interesting shot, and this is entirely luck. You cant rehearse a pose with a tiger. The SX30 shoots at 24-840mm, which can be quadrupled with digital zoom. On stills you'll lose a lot of the detail and it will look poor. This is a frame from a sequence of video. |

Yes you can....but only once! I like your shots. The moon holds a certain fascination. My friend has an awesome telescope that you can pick up the mountains etc. Chris |

Alan thanks.
As the SX40 does not have a link for a remote, do you know if there is a way I can get round this? |

Nice photo, however have you see how strange it seems tonight! A crescent at the bottom , the rest in shadow.

I did, it's pretty new as moons go. I took a few test shots with a 200mm just to have look. I just need to wait a few days for it to get a bit less new and I'll have a go at a few shots.
