I would challenge anyone to tell the difference. Rolling Road tests that I have had done show no power loss and in some cases a power gain on LPG. Assuming, that is, that the system is set up correctly. |

Modern systems yes, but older ones definitely provided less power, and even though they did, people still used them for the savings.
To me, if it could be proved that there would be no ill effects from using the stuff, a little less power would be a small price to pay to be able to use a fuel which costs 40p per litre less

I have run both a Citroen Xantia and Volvo V70 diesels on a mix of diesel and veg oil from a supermarket both covered significant mileages 200,000 both ran smoother on the mix than on straight diesel and both performed with no loss in power that was noticeable if at all, these were not common rail engines and the Xantia had a heated fuel filter which helped in the winter. 27second Kerosene doesnt have the lubricating properties of diesel and will damage a diesel pump, you may get away with adding some 2 stroke oil to it or engine oil for lubrication purpose but dont get caught using it as its heating oil not fuel for use in a vehicle and will probably carry the same penalty as red diesel.

The difference being the SG of the fuel is 80% of petrol, so you have to burn more of it to achieve the same power output. LPG runs cleaner and better than petrol, this is evidenced in the condition of the lube oil at change time. I pay 72 pence per litre, car returns 35 MPG on local runs, and diesel cost 146 pence per litre at the same garage selling the LPG, so a cost per mile equal to a diesel returning 71 MPG around the doors. Oh and it doesn't sound like a tractor either Brian |

I said "up to" and if you think there's no one driving around in an older LPG powered car that's down on power compared to petrol, I beg to differ.
I wasn't saying every LPG powered car is 20% down on power, I was saying that they can be, and it's a minor inconvenience compared to the savings. I used to work as a mechanic years ago on a fleet of vans running LPG, and in those days of carbs, LPG was a black art and not one of the sixty odd vans and cars ran as well on LPG as they did on petrol but the savings were worth it. Especially as the company I worked for had their own gas filling station

The misconception that LPG leads to poorer performance, is usually backed up by a poorly set up system. Oh and in regards to my 40 year old car, I still feel every one of the 95 horse power too There are however dire warnings circulated via service bulletins by MG Rover, concerning the incorrect use of biofuels, kerosene etc, in the M47R and the effects therein upon the high pressure pump. You pay your money, and takes your chance, however I wouldn't personally advise the use of anything else other than white diesel from the pump. Brian |
