Yes i saw them check it. Battery gave a read of 12. Something v. Also, car as done 189,000 miles and lools to still have the original alternator fitted. I have a stack of paperwork and nothing in there for a new one. When buying an alternator do i need to buy the pully as well? This look any good:

Has the red battery warning light in the instrument pack ever illuminated? You haven't said that it has. That is normally the first thing to happen when the alternator fails to charge. Regarding Halfords' test, they say that the battery is good. That doesn't automatically mean that the alternator isn't unless you have evidence to support that theory. Check the alternator's charging voltage yourself, free of charge by using the instrument pack diagnostics built-in to your car. The procedure is described in a "How to". If it's between 13 and 14.5 volts then the alternator is ok. After the failure to start, you charged the battery yourself didn't you. What's to say that hasn't cure the problem? You have a diesel and they are very demanding on battery power when starting the engine. If you've been doing a lot of short journeys or not using the car much then isn't it possible that your battery just became discharged? Don't go spending money on a replacement alternator until you've proved that it's faulty. Simon

Yes. The battery light is illuminated on the dashboard and also a battery connection error message comes up on the screen. That's after charging the battery all night.

11.3v is a correct reading of obd and definitive of a failed alternator. Put battery on charge mate. Do you have battery light illuminated with engine running as Simon asked? Lee.
