Thanks from Angie, Sam and myself for a very well organised day.
We were also very impressed with the fact it was arranged on one of the few fine days we have had in weeks!
It was great to meet you all.

Cheers,

Bob

Hi james
Time to put this one to bed..
I was at a function last night and managed to spend a few minutes chatting to local auther and historian Stuart Morris and this is the rabbit myth as explained by him...Yes feelings do run high when the R word is used but it seems that the rabbit story it is only around 80 years old,and there is no mention of it anywhere in Portlands past before 1931 and it was most likely a light hearted story told by a quarry man to a visitor that quickly turned into folklore..there is no record of bunnies ever being guilty of causing a quarry mans death, there were no tunnel cave in's because the stone is quarried NOT mined and no one has ever seen a bunny eating a explosive cable.Bunnies eat grass so are very seldom seen in a working quarry as it is normaly devoid of any foliage, and the bunnie has not yet been discovered that can dig it's way through limestone..
Maybe not the answer we wanted to hear but as close to the truth as we are going to get....
Cheers Ian

>>>Time to put this one to bed..<<<

.. Good grief! you will be telling us next that there is no tooth fairy and Santa was me Dad!!

And if you don't believe in fairies, visit Soho one evening...

BTW, re local experts. Not long ago I read a book on the "History of Hamworthy" the village I was born in. Biggest load of old codswallop I ever read!! Seems the author only moved into the district 10 years before she had the book published and gathered her info by asking local people!! Do'hhh...

Peter Wright sends his regards to Ian & Jan for putting together a fantastic day out. Peter has attended quite a few meets up at the Halfway House. Peter's car? The Trophy Yellow diesel ZS.
My pictures of the meet will either appear on here on on the thread started by Mangoman sometime this week.
