You have no idea, SDi injectors, decat, remap and your looking at a solid 150 bhp all day long.

Hybrid injectors and hybrid turbos, 2.1 conversions and much much more is out there now.

Ive got a 25 and a 45 diesel now also!

Might want to check out a site I run.

www.roverdiesel.co.uk

The engine is bullet proof. The bits attached to it less so. (fuel pump is the expensive one to sort if it goes).

Earlier 200/400/600 L series diesels are more reliable (as they have a more reliable pump). My 600 is now at something like 282k miles.

They are very tunable and my 600 isn't any slower than my 1.8T ZTT. 150bhp is regularly achieved from the 25/45/zr/zs's.

They are a little unrefined, but they are simple and reliable. The engine is decended from the old O series petrol via a number of other incarnations!

Great little car the missus has one, only downside is everyone seems to want to race it, think its the spoiler.
As previous posters have said very reliable engines my dad had a 200 diesel and then a 400 diesel as taxis, the 200 had nearly 400k on if i remember correctly when he traded it.

mine was tuned with sdi injectors, i think it developed an airlock and in turn overheated and bust the head gasket, the header tank caps are pressurised and need to be checked, regularly as this can cause over heating.

Default MG ZR 2.0L Diesels any good?

It was developed by Rover from the Perkins Prima which was a cracking engine .. My 1st experience of it was in a hired 220 (r3) when they 1st came our was really impressed how quick it was.. apparently in their day they were only just behind the VW tdi unit fie performance and reliability.. If its what you want go for it

Cool

We had the 220 SD for 9 years and never owed us a penny. And one of the nicest colours "Kingfisher Blue".

I had one recently in a 400. Not incredibly econonmical to be honest, about 40 average, so when a decent petrol can average the same there isnt really any economic benefit, especialy when diesel was dear than petrol for long enough.

Not the quickest or most refined but then neither is a VW TDi and no-one seems to mind. Cruises along with a nice purr.

The 400 had the VP30 pump fitted, pretty long lasting. The 45 has the same engine but with the VP37 pump, which doesnt seem to last as long. Its not the most refined engine, but if it really does sound like a tractor, then the pump solonoid has failed (known handily enough as "tractoring...") - its tricky but possible to replace this without removing the pump.

Just like the petrol engines, you need to remember the belts! There are 2 of them - one for the pump, if this fails the engine will stop without damage. If the timing belt goes it most certainly will not, a replacement head will be required, so if you dont know when it was last done, do it asap.

The L series is a very cool running engine, thus in the winter the heater is rubbish unless you are doing a long journey!

Instant starting hot or cold is pretty much guarenteed, difficult starting is almost always due to injection timing being out.
