Default Reverse lights switch - what spanner?

As title - tried to get my reverse switch off the gearbox today - open ender won't work because the webs on the gearbox get in the way, and the smallest ring spanner (18mm) that fits over the plastic connector, is too big for the hex. So do I need an open ring spanner, 17mm?

PS It would need to be high offset, to clear the webs.

I used an old thin walled spark plug spanner like this.

All very well till the replacement switch I bought turned out to have a bigger plastic connector on the end than the one which came off, and no kind of box spanner etc was going to go over it. So I had to use an open ender, which I don’t like doing, naturally.

But then I figured the switch couldn’t unscrew itself when the wires were connected. And, maybe 5 or 6 years later, it hasn’t…

Just changed mine, I used a deep 19mm socket. On tightening only nipped it up slightly any more and there is a danger it could break.

Mine is like Hogweed's, - the plastic connector is bigger than the hex. I may have to butcher a 17mm ring. I'll wait and see what the replacement is like. I can always cut off the connector on the old one.

I changed mine the other day and bought the switch shown in the thread below. Took longer to jack the car up than change the switch and a ring spanner goes over the socket of the switch shown. Cost less than £10 from ebay.
