Default Harmony to symphony leads

Hello, hope someone can help.
I am swapping out the fitted Harmony radio to a Symphony unit. I have read many threads on the forum but seem to be getting myself confused. I know I need an adapter lead to make it work, but which one? I don't have a cd changer but do want the steering wheel controls to continue to operate. There seem to be several adapter leads to choose from on eBay, some claiming to retain the wheel controls. The question is which one?
I would also like to know what the small extra connection is that is hanging next to the bmw one.
Any help gratefully recieved, I seem to be thinking like a muppet on this one....

When buying a adapter lead to change from a BMW plug to ISO connectors you have to make sure that all the pins are in the BMW plug. This is because some leads available on Ebay do not have all the pins and wires.

It may pay you to buy two leads and use pins and wires from one to fill the other.

This shows the BMW plug with all the sockets.

These are the connections.

This shows the ISO connectors.

Thank you so much for the quick response. I have had a good look at the diagrams and I think it is starting to make sense. It's a bit daunting with so many connections; last time I wired in a car radio the biggest issue was if the car was negative or positive earth....
I will get stuff ordered tonight and update when it arrives and I have had a go. Cheers!

Well, the bits all arrived at last and it all went absolutely brilliantly. No problems at all, well chuffed! Guess I need to start thinking about a speaker upgrade....
Thanks for the help Dave T, sorted!

Am hoping to carry out this task myself . Any indication which parts you ordered and from whom?

I'm also in a position to carry out this upgrade. I have two leads, one only has two pins missing in the large plug, pins 4 & 7. At the other end the brown plug is fully populated & the (in my case) black plug has No 2 empty. So would this connect to 4 or 7 in the large plug? This will still leave me with an empty pin of course but there's nothing left to connect it too. Thanks.

These are the connections for the BMW plug.

Pin 4 is not connected as it is for a telephone mute.

Pin 7 is for the K Bus only needed if you have a CD Changer connected.

The Brown connector is for the speakers, which use all 8. Pins 4 & 7 in the BMW connector (Phone mute & K-Bus) are not in the ISO connector. It should be pin 1 in the Black ISO connector that is empty (phone mute input), pins 2 & 3 are for the steering wheel controls. The K-Bus is not part of the ISO connectors, in the O.E. wiring, it is via the CD changer connector.

Ah yes, my mistake. Looking at the illustration of the rear sockets on the unit it is No 1 in the black plug which is empty. So this is the phone mute & not required but l do have a CD changer though there is nowhere now for pin 7 to connect to so assuming that the big top socket is the CD connection, l should be ready for a plug and play conversion as per RayKay's advice. Thanks for both inputs, no pun intended.

For the CD changer, it is an 8 pin mini ISO connector (usually blue) which fits the right hand side of the socket shown in Duotone's picture in post 2.
