Piston rings by the sound of it....

Engine out, strip refurb rebuild, all gasket and seal kits / belts while you are there.., may as well put an uprated crank in if available, the rings themselves, then all of the tools and bits necessary, 3-5 days work for a DIY... expensive but you would end up with a good engine

depends a lot on mileage and service history, with modern oils, rings, pistons and bores don't wear as heavily as they used to, if rings have gone what state are pistons in, and bores for that matter?

Could end up an expensive job and you won't really know until you strip and inspect the component parts, also add cost of valve or two, maybe valve guides, springs and seats etc. - all very common years ago, much rarer today, if your own car always worth a look, if you have to buy it first, maybe wait for another will be best bet.

Agree with this, the bold bit particularly.

I'd assume the worst and be looking at a total rebuild or preferably a known 100% good, low mileage replacement lump, with 100% known history.

Both options a lot of work and expensive, imo.

Having said all that in my previous post, what makes the seller say the rings have gone?

From what I've seen on here, the 1.8s aren't known for that unless they've done starship mileage and in fact I've not even seen it mentioned on here at all

Indeed, what is the mileage?
As I'd expect rings to be good for at least 125k+ (perhaps more experienced 75 owners can confirm/deny this?).

Much more likely to be the dreaded HGF, which might be a different proposition.

Rings gone = blue smoke.
HGF = white steam (?).

I've seen 75s (and other K Series powered cars) with well over 150k and no ring issues - it's really not common.
That said, if it's a nice car just drop another engine into it - £300 will get you a good one.

Thats if it is the rings. It could have been diagnosed incorrectly.
As others have said, its not exactly a common K series fault

No, seriously, it might still be worthwhile, especially if it's in nice nick.

You need to ask more questions of the seller and post more info though, imo.
