Default Rear suspension ridehight

Hi
A workmate recently bought a 75 cdti auto with 130k on the clock. We found that the drives side rear suspension strut was completely shot. As a result we changed the shock absorbers and springs on both sides with new items.

After the work was done there was a difference in the hight of the car at the rear - not noticed if this was there before the work was done.

On the drivers side the gap between the top of the wheel and the wheel arch is 2.25 inch (the side which had the u/s shock absorber) and on the passenger rear just over 3.00 inch.

Both wheels were removed and the spring settings re-checked and found to be ok.

Is this ok or should we look further into this.

What springs did you use? Genuine or aftermarket?

There were various different specifications for road springs, every car should have a sticker under the rear seat cushion which gives a code for the springs fitted at the factory.

This can then be cross referenced to the correct part number required.

The only problem is some springs are NLA, and equivalents have been issued, whether these equivalents are 'correct' or not is only known by X-Part.

Scroll down to the 'CI Codes' section.

Default Rear ride hight

Thanks Neil

There is no sticker under the seat unfortunately. Two Sach springs were bought from EuroParts as per their catalog.

I may swop them over this weekend to see if the problem moves with them.

Geraint,

According to MGR the height (at unladen weight) from the hub centre to the rear wheel arch should be between 389 and 409 mm for Rover models.

Simon, is that a tolerance range or different values for different models?

If not within spec I recommend measuring the spring length when removed from the car.

According to the source of information that cannot be named, height from centre of wheel to wheel arch should be:-

Rover 75. Front. 408.5mm + or - 10 (16.08 inch + or - 0.39)
Rear 399mm + or - 10 (15.71 inch + or - 0.39)

MG models are listed as 20mm lower

Default Rear ride hight

Thank's for the replies and interest - will check the measurements over the weekend.

One point, we raised the rear of the car by the tow hook point and the side with the bigger gap (passenger side), the rear tyre left the ground before the drivers side, with the car being raised a further 2 in before this tyre was clear of the ground.

The side with the smaller gap has the wheel hanging lower when the car is raised off the ground.

Is this significant in any way?
