Default My findings after removing head!

Hi all,
I removed the cylinder head today on a K-series because its been leaking coolant down the block. Found a MLS gaskets been fitted, see- http://www.the75andztclub.co.uk/foru...d.php?t=177615

The liners are not .004 proud but are near .002-.003 on cylinders 1,2 and 4 and no 3 is .001 proud.
Also the face of the head is a bit of a mess and looks like the fire rings have marked it but it does look straight.

Do I have a problem with the this block?

You have some protrusion of liners so I'd say you are good to go. - Edited to add, I'd go with an elastomer gasket, I like to see at least 2thou for MLS.

That head would probably benefit from some peening of the fire rings, and maybe go with a shim for the belt and braces approach.

Have you measured the head height to ensure it is within spec for skimming?

have you turned the engine over by hand with the head off to see if any of the liners are loose?

Its a little concerning no1 piston isnt at TDC... Whatever you do DON'T TURN THE ENGINE OVER WITH THE HEAD OFF as you will most likely move a liner.

Why should no 1 be on TDC??
As for the pictures in post one, where are the pictures of the leaking area?

I set the cams on the timing marks and checked the crank was on the mark before removing the timing belt. And no the crank has not be moved!

Have you measured the head height to ensure it is within spec for skimming? No this is a new one to me! Whats the min height?

Thanks.

Yes, I have seen that, but there should be evidence on the head gasket to support this. Have you found the problem?

Sorry, it shouldn't. I had a mouth before brain moment.

118.3mm is the minimum head height.

Just some off topic interest...

The last time I had a head off a k-series I was greeted with this.

Still, the head was OK.

Maybe not then!

I've had better days it has to be said!
