Start with a confession: it began at 12 years old with a pack of Chesterfields (very aptly named as it happens) given to me by an older local lad as payment for teaching him the chord Gmaj7 on the guitar on his return after his first Merchant Navy voyage.
After much coughing the social cache of American fags in a Cellophane pack, which you soon learned to flick the bottom of to get one up as it were, and not unlike my early day heroes in the Mickey Spillane books, was so cool. It continued with more common coffin nails until 28 when I went over to St. Bruno/Erinmore mix in a pipe plus occasional cigars (identity crisis). Then stopped completely in 1984 because I wanted to. Never even missed it, very lucky. I sometimes think the vast Dogger Bank sized cumulus cloud of exhaust fumes from a stranger’s lungs is best avoided. On the other hand I suppose it might just be an alternative to the flu’ jab.

My lad used to vape up until 6 months ago. The smell of the flavours plus the amount of "smoke" in the air was disgusting. Anyway. We had a discussion and I banned him from vaping in his room.
Shortly after that he came down with a bad chest infection. ( I didn't think it was a good idea breathing that much vapour into your lungs. The clouds of the stuff was rediculous ) Anyway. He's had about 3 chest infections this year. He's got a really bad one at the moment. He's got to have a chest x ray now. He's not been vaping for over 6 months. But I'm thinking it's that which has done some damage. If we were supposed to breathe water we'd have gills! He's never actually smoked. Just the idiot mates he hangs around with, at one point they were all vaping! Oh the "discussions " we've had at my house!

I have a pet theory that is undoubtedly without any medical knowledge on my part.
The inhalation of toxic substances or any 'foreign' mood suppressant or enhancement works by furtively coating and numbing the receptors or nerve endings thus ensuring effects can not be felt until too late to recover completely. To actually volunteer payment for such treatment seems to me even worse than leaving the effects to fester. The same can not be said of jam doughnuts, chocolate eclairs, and fried banana sandwiches on white.

I can't fault your logic.

Why does smoking make things so much worse ????? Looking into the subject of lung cancer I found it usually starts up with carcinogens in our lungs. Also the air we breath is full of carcinogens. It seems that nicotine addiction is what makes smokers light up but it's not what does the damage !! Our bronchial tubes have a coating of very fine hairs called cilium. These hairs move up and down in a wave action. Now here's the clever bit. They move upwards slowly and downwards fast. Took nature thousands of years to perfect. Lol. When we breath air into our lungs we also breath in carcinogens. ( Substances that can trigger off cancer. ) Nature has designed this very clever way of keeping our lungs clean of dust. The dust particles settle on these hairs and then the hairs carry the dust back up slowly towards our throat. the hairs flick back down at high speed leaving behind the dust ( inertia ) then slowly lift up the next particles and so on. When the dust reaches the back of the throat there are sensitive nerves that detect it and these nerves make you cough and the dust is ejected to be swallowed and pass harmlessly through the stomach. Now to smoking. What happens when you smoke is that TAR from the smoke coats the cilia hairs and sticks them down so they can no longer work !! Thus all the dust particles including the carcinogens you breath in REMAIN in your lungs. There the carcinogens now have time to do their insidious work and can trigger normal cells into super fast reproduction. ( ie. Those cells have become CANCER cells ! ) Some time ago the cigarette manufacturers started to sell cigarettes with the words LOW TAR on the packets. This was an attempt put less tar into smokers lungs but was of little help. Now a last thought:-- When you see how much dust lands on your car daily think how much more is taken into your lungs when you breath. Probably hundreds of times more. Some of this dust is breathed out but a large amount stays there cos you've negated natures cleaning system through being a smoker and gumming up the works !! OK. One more last thought. Lol. Imagine leaving the same oil in your car and NEVER changing it or of never vacuum cleaning out your house. Just imagine the MESS. You tend to ignore what is happening inside you lungs cos you can't see it But that is how your lungs at this moment are looking... Nothing more to say, I guess. Colvert. |

Nowt much wrong with vaping, providing it is done sensibly. Sensibly does not include massive clouds and lots of wattage. Even ignoring the potential damage it can do, it makes the person doing it look ridiculous and its even more anti-social than smoking.
