Default why you should not speed

wife and I went out for the evening, Driving through the New Forest there is no street lighting or lighting from property. There was a car a way ahead and so I was on dipped beam.
For a split second I stamped on the brakes because.... a blimin horse was walking along in the centre of my lane, not a care in the world.
I just needed a split second of extra time to plan my next action which was to indicate right and change lane and go past, no panic swerve. There was a car behind so the indicator was for them as a warning of a hazard.

If I'd been doing 40 which is the speed limit in that area instead of 30 I'm not sure what the outcome would have been, speeding I think it would have been a possible dodgy outcome.

That horse just appeared so quickly.

Round here where i am its deer that suddenly pop out of hedges onto the road in front of you.

Badgers seem to have a death wish as well.

Get that here as well. Some idiots treat the main road past the cottages as a racetrack, a few days ago I watched 6 or 8 deer crossing the road in the middle of the day.

Was the horse being chased by a tin man in a red dress?

When I drive through the New Forest, I always wonder about the horses.

They have a whole forest, but the most tasty bit to eat is always at the side of the road.

them too, there is one stretch where they are quite common, not sure what is special about that area. Its only a 100 yard length but they are often found there. Cows don't move so fast but they too can wonder in the road.
Been here about 18 years and last night was the first time I came close to
hitting something.
