Can anyone explain why that doesn't cause a massive spike?

The spark is all the capacitors in the cars electronic systems, charging back up. A second attempt to connect soon after the first will produce a much reduced spark.

As I have said several times, I charge in situ - always. You either trust your charger or not. I trust my chargers or they go in the bin and that trust extends to the several Aldi/lidl ones I possess. I have a choice of around seven or eight chargers, but my goto is one of the Aldi/Lidl ones.

Always keep in mind your cars alternator can chuck as much as 30amps into your battery, after the engine has just been started.

Fix a poor handbrake; DIY ABS diagnostic unit; Loan of the spanner needed to change the CDT belts; free OBD diagnostics +MAF; Correct Bosch MAF cheap; DVB-T install in an ex-hi-line system; DD install with a HK amp; FBH servicing.

I've taken a vow of poverty. To annoy me, send money.

A quality European or a "close copy" generic far-eastern one?

I am only besotted by the genuine Ms Jolie as the others can be unreliable.

I agree, there is some very poor quality stuff available, but I doubt the likes of Lidl/ Aldi would risk selling such items throughout much of the world and offer a three years guarantee with them.

That's what fuse boxes and the correct battery re-installation procedure are for.

Any charger no matter the quality, supposed or not, can have a failure and when that happens I would suggest 240v is far more worrying than <13v.

Personally, I would carefully inspect even a Saag Aloo - which coincidentally is authentic from Morrisons and just some sort of gloop from some the others - rather than rely on the judgements of the supermarkets on the internals of anything in an enclosure.

..................

Traditional fuses do not deal well with transients of microseconds duration.

But, it is the quality of the components that determines the failure rate and what occurs in the event of a failure.

As I have already said, I am perfectly happy for everyone else to put whatever charger they see fit on their car. This is what being a man and taking the consequences of ones decisions like a man is about in my view.

I have given my views on what I would or would not do and my reasoning.

Those booster batteries can blow the lead paste out of the lead grids that the paste lives in.---

I bought one of those cheap Aldi/Lidl chargers. Seems to do the job.

My old charger is only 40 years old so not a match for your one.--

I never remove the battery leads. As long as the charger is connected before switching on to avoid sparks. Also switched off before removing them too. Not one problem in 60 years plus, using this method.--

The charger on start up provides much less than the alternator when that first starts up. ( 5 amps to maybe 30 amps or so. )

Actually, that is not the purpose of fuses. They are there to limit and prevent overloads on wiring. They will not open or blow on a surge. They blow based on time versus the amount they are overloaded by, never instantly unless the overload is quite severe.
