Err no, I have retrofitted PPD heated memory leather (with absolute attention to factory spec wiring, as well as the car's central coding key), message centre IPK, auto dimming mirror, chrome skullcaps leather gearknob, walnut wheel, and 16" 7 spoke Connoisseur alloy wheels.

I have left the manual aircon, as it is considerably easier to use in practice than ATC.

To be perfectly honest, if the seats the car had came with not smelled like an old boiler suit, the previous owner having sandpaper for hands, and the factory fitted Comets had decent tyres, I may well have left alone.

As it is I'm more than happy with my "classicasseur"

What could possibly be easier than leaving it on auto, and occasionally pressing the demist button?

I find that the 'Auto' setting isn't always the right one. For example, get into a hot car in the summer. 'Auto' selects recirculation mode, but outside air is cooler and therefore will reduce the heat level faster initially. Once the air con. has started producing cold air then it makes sense to choose recirculation.

The second example is the ridiculous automatic operation of the HRW.

Thirdly, I find that the cabin air temperature sampling system isn't particularly accurate. When in 'Econ' mode I can be comfortable at a particular temperature setting. If I then switch on the air conditioning the output is cooler. In theory, this shouldn't happen (provided of course that the ambient air is cool enough to achieve the selected cabin temperature).

Using 'Auto' constantly also reduces the life of your radiator fan motor brushes or silver resistor, if you have either of these.

Mine is a facelift Classic SE, has basic aircon, seven spoke alloys and spacesaver. It is 135 CDTi and currently has 29000 on the clock and is completely original and will stay that way. I have never been bothered about gadgets but I would have liked cruise control, it is the third 75 I have had and is by far in the best condition of the three.

But could it be a classic car, well perhaps, one day if I keep it that long, surely the early pre-project drive cars will be classics first and maybe the diesels, being the most durable, will outlast the rest. Maybe it will depend on how quickly they will be scrapped and which models will that be. V6s are expensive to run and will be kept by enthusiasts who will look after them, those with K series engines will probably go first as they succumb to HGF and non enthusiasts will not want to repair them. Having a facelift I am conscious that if I have an accident it is likely to be written off as body parts are difficult to source, so I drive very defensively
