Default piston rings

Its a 54 plate in firefrost red ,looking at the pictures of it it looks in good nick ,guy says its burning lots of oil and there is a lot of smoke when it drives ,its a 1.8 turbo 76000 on clock mot till febuary next year

The 1.8's have their problems, but piston ring wear isn't normally one of them!

As it's a Turbo, more chances it's the turbo's that gone!

Sounds like the guy doesn't know what he's talking about it, (not uncommon on our cars!)

Get it to someone who knows our cars for a proper diagnosis!

That's nowt for rings, unless it's been totally thrashed in all it's entire life.

I'd still put my money on the HG or maybe the turbo.

Turbo almost certainly if it's blue smoke.

Depends on what needs fixing!

I would allow £1,000 to do properly!

Already own a v6 might be in the market for a 1.8 75 or zt as had hours cut in work so think the 6 running costs tax so forth bit expensive .wife wants me to get a focus or a nice Renault megane she says ! never I want to stay in the rover mg family

Fair play.
Both are a pile of rubbish imo, in comparison to a 75.

And while 1k might be a reasonable figure if you have to go through a trader and pay proper prices, there might be much cheaper options.
Especially if you buy off Ebay and do your own work.

But then, I'd be out of my depth in answering accurately.
