Good news!

I stripped the NS rear down this morning and found the garage who had installed a new bearing on that corner around 3 years ago had caked everything in so much grease that debris was being picked up and sticking all over everything.
Upon removing the bearing to clean all the grease and debris off I found a sizeable piece of rush from the backplate exactly where Artic had suggested.
Once everything was cleaned down and put back together the problem is solved!

Thank you all for your assistance and advise with this.

Hi Eric.
Nice to hear you did the investigation of the NS also, as i said in the post above 9/10 it's the OS seems you found the 10

As you also point out there is no need to cover the bearing or the back plate in grease as it attracts debris, always best to keep it clean a treat the back plate and paint it to help stop any further rust.

Hello everybody,

Perhaps a silly question, but just to make sure: is OS rear bearing the usual suspect with LHD too, or should I start NS on my (Dutch, LHD) R75?

Logic would dictate that the R/H side bearing / backplate that is the culprit in the UK is mainly due to its position on the road and the conditions it experiences as opposed to the L/H side.

Therefore you could realistically argue that it is not wrong to assume the opposite side would suffer where the cars drive on the opposite side of the road. After all, the installation is identical on both sides, the only variable is the environment.

Today finally had my rear wheels removed, turned out both back plates were pretty rusted. I suppose the only option to get the ‘banging’ sorted would be to have both plates replaced? How sure that would cure the banging though? Thanks again for all your advice!
