Default New Owner - bought a dud

Hello everyone,

I'm new to the forum, and right off the bat I have a few issues with my Rover 75, it's a 51 plate 2.0 diesel CDT Connoisseur SE with an automatic transmission, and it's got some problems, i've read through a few of the existing threads and I can't seem to find anything that really matches my issue, when travelling above 50mph and slowing, the gearbox struggles to change from 5th to 4th and stalls the car, no problems with changing up to 5th, and she'll change to 4th from 3rd no problem at all, nothing wrong with reversing either as I thought it might be the reversing piston.

As you can tell, I'm at a bit of a loss, there's other issues with the car but this is right at the top of my list really, any help would be appreciated.

I would be doing a fluid change as a first port of call, you have Jules around 20 miles from you, no one better in the area for working on our cars.

I’ve checked the brake and gear fluid and it seemed a little low, I’ve topped it up with dot 4, and I couldn’t replicate the same gear issue I had on the A55, it wasn’t so much an issue with the solenoid as it seemed like it was low rev stalling when slowing down, as it would if you had a manual and just broke and didn’t press the clutch in, I’ll post back if I manage to stall again, thanks for all the replies peeps.

The autos are very sensitive to old fluid.
Also, If the fluid is too low, too high, or if someone has used the wrong fluid it is a problem.
I agree that the first task should be to have the fluid changed
by someone that is familiar with these auto gearboxes.
Odds are you will see a marked improvement.

I‘d definitely would replace the oil and do a couple of flushes to get every bit of the old oil out. Be advised that you need JATCO N402 certified oil, nothing less suffices for these picky boxes. Don‘t use oil that does not specifically say that it is Jatco n402 certified. By experience, I can tell it‘s a TERRIBLE idea

Double flush the gearbox. Do it and forget for a long time. They are an outstanding gearbox and rarely give trouble.
As per the other postings, see Jules up the road from you and get it some proper attention. Other places tend to have no idea about the cars any more.
When I go I get the train from his place to Llandudno and spend the day there.

And from my experience I can only say that this is not the case. The box is the same as used in many Nissans, Jaguars and even some Volkswagens! Look it up. It is an off the shelf box used by many other cars where no special oil is prescribed!
To think that the Jatco box https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o..._transmissions
would suddenly need any highly special type of oil, just because the box sits in a Rover does not make any sense, whatsoever!. It is true that Rover specifies the 402, but they also specify a certain engine oil, and that is most likely pure advertising revenue or Royalties or whatever backhand they got. Nothing more.
I have run mine on good quality Dexron III for - I guess 10 years. No problems at all.

Oh, and yes, that is personal experience!
