Default Noisy engine, not crankshaft pulley?

Hi, any suggestions where to start..... my diesel has developed a noisy clatter, which seems to come from around the belts and pulley area, but I really can't seem to pinpoint it. I have changed the crankshaft pulley and belts, but the noise persists. Not sure how to go about isolating where the culprit is, or if there are any regular parts such as the idler pulley, A/C compressor etc that are known to wear and cause earache! The noise is actually more intrusive in the cabin then when standing outside next to the car.... Cheers for any clues, Phil.

choices are, water pump, power steering pump, crankshaft end float, timing chain wear, ac compressor (does it go quiet when AC is on?)

Remove the aux belts and see if the noise goes away.

And whilst they are off feel all the pulleys for play and roughness. Mine clattered when the water pump was on the way out.

Thanks all, guess it's going to be another weekend under the car, hope it's not the water pump!
